Since 1899, the Perth Mint has produced some of the most beautiful gold coins for keen investors and collectors. The Perth Mint is the oldest Australian mint and was originally a branch of the British Royal Mint, as was the now-closed Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint. Best known for its Gold Kangaroo coins, Gold Koala coins and Lunar Series, the Perth Mint is one of the few mints to create gold coins with a purity of .9999.

Australia is also home to the Royal Australian Mint, which is responsible for manufacturing circulating Australian Gold Coins and other nation’s coins, as well as Olympic and military medals.

Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins

First released in 1989, the Australian Gold Kangaroo coins are firm favorites among gold coin collectors and investors. These .9999 pure gold coins are issued as legal tender in Australia and produced in weights of 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/10 oz., 1/20 oz., and 1 oz.

The Australian Gold Kangaroo coin was originally known as the Australian Gold Nugget, which featured an image of a gold nugget on the reverse of the coin. However, in 1989, the reverse design was changed to a kangaroo, a more fitting symbol of Australia. Nowadays, the Perth Mint rotates this Australian gold coin’s reverse design each year, and now offers different artists’ impressions of the nation’s treasured kangaroo.

When it comes to the obverse of this Australian Gold Coin, you will always find a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by Rank-Broadley in 1998.

Australian Gold Koala Coins

Another sought-after Australian Gold Coin is the Koala, introduced by the Perth Mint in 2008. Just like the Kangaroo coin, the mint changes the reverse design of the Australian Gold Koala coin each year. Regardless of the minting year, the image always focuses on a koala and a eucalyptus leaf and includes some subtle changes to capture the interest of the enthusiastic collector or investor. Engravings of the minting year, weight, metal content and purity are also featured on the reverse of the coin, along with the phrase Australian Koala.

On the obverse side of the Australian Gold Koala coin sits the image of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Rank-Broadley. The Australian Gold Koala coin is made of .9999 pure gold and is struck in fractional weights, as well as 1 oz. and 2 oz. sizes. We should also mention that the Perth Mint sets a production limit on the Australian Gold Koala coins, along with many of its coin programs.

Australian Gold Lunar Series Coins

The first Australian Gold Lunar Series to come from the Perth Mint included coins that were issued between the year 1996 and 2007. In 2008, the second series was released and is still ongoing to this day. Both series feature gold coins which celebrate the 12-year Chinese Lunar Calendar, highlighting zodiac animals on the reverse side of the coins. These animals include the:

  • Rat
  • Ox
  • Tiger
  • Rabbit
  • Dragon
  • Snake
  • Horse
  • Goat
  • Monkey
  • Rooster
  • Dog
  • Pig

All of these Australian Gold Coins are struck with .9999 pure gold content and available in 1 oz. and fractional weights. Although rare, the Perth Mint has also offered higher weight coins from the Lunar I and Lunar II series. In addition to the gold bullion coins, proof versions and a 3-coin set of the Lunar II series have also been produced.

Choose from the Many Beautiful Australian Gold Coin Designs

Having crafted some of the finest gold coins in the industry, including the world’s largest (one tonne) gold coin, the Perth Mint never fails to deliver on quality and brilliance. With such a wide variety of popular Australian Gold Coins to choose from at Capital Gold Group, you can easily expand your portfolio or personal collection of beautiful coins.

One of the key differences between Australian Gold Coins compared with many other world gold coins is that their annual mintage is limited. This makes coins, such as the Australian Gold Kangaroo and Koala more desirable for numismatists and investors. It makes sense to buy into Australian gold coins as a hedge against inflation, as well as to diversify and add value to your portfolio.

Purchasing Australian Gold Coins and placing them in an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is also an ideal way to grow your retirement fund over time. As gold coins from the Perth Mint meet strict fineness standards, you can designate your gold investments from down under to the security of your IRA with ease.

From a mystical Chinese zodiac gold coin to the staple Kangaroo and intricate Koala coin, there are many Australian Gold Coin options available here at Capital Gold Group. With a wide selection of weights, designs, and finishes in stock, we guarantee to have a Perth Mint coin investment suited to your budget.
