The Gold Krugerrand is not only the world’s oldest 1 oz. gold bullion coin but it’s also a prized possession in countless portfolios and collections.

First minted in 1967 by the South African Mint, the Gold Krugerrand is one of the highest selling and most sought-after gold coins today. It’s one of the very few gold coins that isn’t stamped with a legal tender value because it was specifically created for use as an investment tool. According to South Africa’s Rand Refinery, the Gold Krugerrand is also the world’s most widely traded gold bullion coin. Suitable for purchase as an investment or a collectable, the Gold Krugerrand consists of impressive 22-karat gold and offers each buyer a wonderful piece of history.

The obverse of the Gold Krugerrand coin features a portrait of the first president of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. He was made president in 1905 and inspired the name of the Krugerrand coin. On the obverse of all Gold Krugerrands is also the words South Africa written in both Afrikaans and English.

Created by Coert Steynberg, the image of a springbok proudly sits on the reverse of the Gold Krugerrand. This is because the springbok is the national symbol of South Africa.

The History behind South African Gold Krugerrands

Introduced in 1967, South African Gold Krugerrands were the first gold coins to contain one troy ounce of gold. They quickly became a hot topic among collectors and investors, and for nearly two decades were the only option for those wishing to collect or invest in gold coins.

It is reported that the South African Government backed the production of Gold Krugerrands because it wanted to encourage personal ownership of gold coins. From the year 1967 to 1979, around 22 million Gold Krugerrands were sold to U.S. buyers alone. However, in the late 1970s, some countries rejected the Gold Krugerrand because of its association with the apartheid in South Africa. In spite of this, it was still the most sought-after gold bullion coin in the world.

These days, the Gold Krugerrand remains a highly desirable coin and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. Along with 1 oz. versions, buyers can purchase 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/10 oz. Gold Krugerrands, as well as bullion and proof coin products.

Nothing Less than 22-Karat Fine Gold Content

South African Gold Krugerrands are made with 22-karat gold and have a fineness of .9167 gold purity. They also come in a range of sizes, and the very popular one troy ounce Gold Krugerrand dimensions include:

  • Thickness – 2.84mm
  • Mass – 33.930 grams
  • Diameter – 32.8mm

In 1980, Gold Krugerrands represented 90 percent of all gold bullion coins in the world and are still regarded as one of the top gold coins for buying, trading and selling.

Gold Krugerrands Make the Best Physical Investments

Though debuted in 1967, Gold Krugerrands remain hugely popular the world over. Each of these gold coins from the South African Mint is visually stunning and has been made to appeal to all types of investors and coin hobbyists. They also feature historical and interesting designs that add significantly to their intrinsic values. A special collectors’ series is now available, and there is no limit to the amount of Gold Krugerrands a person can add to their portfolio or collection.

While Gold Krugerrands are not IRA eligible, they are excellent choices for various other forms of investment or retirement accounts. Gold Krugerrands also have an advantage because they don’t have a face value. Instead, their value is based on the pure gold content and the spot price of gold. This means that these gold coins provide a safe haven and a great store of value, as well as a hedge against inflation.
