Rare Coins

The U.S. Mint has produced a staggering selection of coins over the years, from dollars and quarters to dimes, nickels and cents. Of course, many American coins are no longer being struck and have become valuable items as a result. Many of these past U.S. Mint releases appeal to collectors, investors and numismatists because they are worth more than their face value. These rare coins are also highly coveted for the important part they played in America’s coinage history.

Most rare coins are a must-have for every collector, with early issues, error coins and those with the lowest mintages being among the most sought. Despite their age, many rare coins can be found in great condition, which often increases appeal. Seasoned investors are also well aware that rare coins have numismatic value and will purchase such coins to boost their wealth.

Collectors and numismatists around the world are not only attracted rare U.S coins but other rare coins including colonial coins, tokens and Hawaiian coins. Then there are the rare pattern coins, which are essentially test coins that never made it into circulation. Historical European coins shouldn’t be overlooked either because they have become just as popular as rare American coins.

The Most Valuable Rare Coins

The true value of any rare coin depends on a number of things, such as scarcity and condition. Plus, like with all coins, the value of your rare coin will change over time. Some people think the rarer the coin, the more they will have to pay to own it. This is generally correct, however, the most valuable coins are usually those with an error or low mintage numbers. For example, some 1854 Quarters featuring the popular Seated Liberty design were struck with a “huge O” mintmark on the reverse. These issues are worth considerably more than the 1854 Quarters without the large O. Then there’s the legendary 1894-S Barber Dime which has an original mintage of just 24 pieces. It is one of the greatest rarities of American coinage, with the finest known example reaching over $1 million.
