The 1804 Half Cent is a fascinating Draped Bust Half Cent issue that was struck in five primary and sought after varieties.

There aren’t many collectors who haven’t heard about the 1804 Half Cent that features the beautiful Draped Bust design. Not only is it an attractive Half Cent that boasts historical significance but it also comes in five major varieties, all of which are among the most coveted American coins. While some collectors yearn to get their hands on every variety, others are happy to own just one or a couple because they know how difficult it has become to locate these popular pieces.

The obverse of the 1804 Half Cent Crosslet depicts Lady Liberty, facing right. She is shown wearing drapery around her bust and a pretty ribbon in her curled hair. One variety, known as the “Spiked Chin” deals with Liberty on the obverse and displays a spike sticking out from her chin. Joining the image is the inscription LIBERTY above and the date below. The 1804 date is also of significant importance because it displays either a Plain 4 or a Crosslet 4.

On the reverse is an elegant wreath that has been tied together with a bow and situated above 1/200. The coin’s ONE CENT VALUE is surrounded by the wreath, which is encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. There are two major varieties on the reverse including one with stems at the bottom of the wreath and the other without stems.

The Five Primary 1804 Half Cent Varieties

Draped Bust Half Cents dated 1804 offer collectors and investors five rare and interesting options. There are actually three major varieties on the obverse and two on the reverse, which makes collecting this coin as exciting as it is challenging.

The first primary variety is known as the “Plain 4, with Stems.” These issues feature a plain 4 (without crosslet) in the date on the obverse, as well as two stems at the bottom of the wreath where the bow is tied on the reverse. The next variety is the “Plain 4, without Stems”, with the plain 4 in the date and a wreath with no stems.

There’s also another variety referred to as the “Crosslet 4, with Stems”, which shows a tiny vertical bar at the end of the point furthest right on the number 4 in the date, along with stems on the reverse by the bow on the wreath. Then there’s the “Crosslet 4, without Stems”, also with the crosslet 4 in the date but no stems on the reverse.

Finally, there is the “Spiked Chin” 1804 Half Cent, a variety caused by damage to an obverse die. This type is easily identifiable by looking at Liberty’s face, which will show a spike-like object extending to the right from her chin. Some coins struck with the same die do not have this feature and are extremely rare.
