Silver

Like gold, silver serves as a low-risk investment vehicle and can protect your purchasing power over long periods of time. However, silver is more affordably priced than the very popular yellow colored precious metal, meaning you can accumulate more silver than gold dollar for dollar. By being lower in price, buying silver is achievable for both large scale and small investors. The rising industrial demand for silver should also help to propel prices, so it makes perfect sense to invest in physical silver sooner rather than later.

Silver Bars

There are all sorts of ways to invest in silver including purchasing silver bars. Bullion bars tend to have lower premiums than coins, making them ideal for investments. They also enable you to quickly build your portfolio and are easy to stack and store. There is plenty of choice with regards to silver bar weights, which start from 1 oz. You should expect to pay less per ounce the larger the size of the bar you choose, so be sure to keep this in mind when placing an order.

Many well-known private mints, such as Geiger, Asahi and Scottsdale, Sunshine Minting are responsible for producing high-quality silver bars, as are a few government mints including the Royal Canadian Mint. It’s also possible to buy silver bars manufactured by reputable retired mints, like Engelhard and Johnson Matthey.

Silver Coins

If you’re interested in owning bullion with collectability factor, silver coins might be the best option. Silver coins have legal tender status and are minted by national mints. Some of the most popular national silver coins include American Silver Eagles, South African Silver Krugerrands and Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins to name just a few. You also have the option to purchase silver coins featuring designs that are no longer being struck, such as Morgan Silver Dollars and Peace Dollars.

Thanks to collector demand, the price of silver coins tends to be higher than bars and rounds. You also need to be aware that only a certain amount of silver coins are struck by world mints each year. Some silver coins are classified as limited edition releases because they are produced in small numbers and for a set period of time. Limited edition silver coins are considered collectors’ items and always sell for significantly more than their face value.

Silver Rounds

While a silver round will look and feel incredibly similar to a silver coin, there are some important differences between the two. For instance, silver rounds do not have a face value and they are not the same size as government approved coins. Silver rounds are privately minted and their worth is determined by their metal content. Other than their shape and design, silver rounds are essentially the same as silver bars.

Silver rounds come in a wide range of designs, one of the most sought-after being the Scottsdale Mint Stacker Silver Round. Some rounds even feature coin-like designs, such as the 2 oz Winged Liberty Silver Round from the Intaglio Mint and the 1 oz Saint-Gaudens Silver Round from SilverTowne. Although not considered collectors’ items, silver rounds have become more popular in recent years because of the rising number of eye-catching designs offered by celebrated private mints.
