Now one of the world’s most identifiable and best-selling pieces, the American Silver Eagle is America’s official silver bullion coin.

The United States Mint originally released American Silver Eagle Coins in 1986 in both bullion and proof forms. Not only are these coins often described as the most beautiful silver coins to come from America but their weight, silver content and purity are guaranteed by the U.S. Government.

On the obverse side of the American Silver Eagle Coins is an image of Walking Liberty, a design created by Adolph Weinman for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar that was issued from 1916 to 1947. The text LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST are also featured on the obverse, as well as the year of minting.

The reverse of all American Silver Eagle Coins displays an eagle with open wings. There are 13 stars above the eagle to represent each original state of America, along with the engraving UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Other inscriptions on the reverse include 1 OZ FINE SILVER and ONE DOLLAR.

In 2006, the United States Mint enhanced its program with another popular piece, a burnished American Silver Eagle Coin with a unique finish.

Mintage History

Since 1986, the United States Mint has been producing bullion and proof versions of the American Silver Eagle Coin featuring a face value of $1 (USD). Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of .999 pure silver and is backed by the U.S. Government. The bullion version of the coin has the most impressive mintage figures of the two American Silver Eagle Coin forms, with 11.4 million struck in 1987 alone. However, most collectors prefer the proof coins over the bullion versions because they have been struck twice to make their details more striking.

It wasn’t until 2006 when the United States Mint released Burnished American Silver Eagle Coins in celebration of the coin’s 20th anniversary. These coins quickly became a hot topic among collectors, especially when the U.S. Mint announced that it would only issue a limited amount of the burnished coins annually. All Burnished American Silver Eagle Coins have a distinctive matte appearance, rather than the typical shiny look of a bullion coin. They also feature a W mint mark to identify the West Point Mint in New York as their place of production.

Certified and Uncirculated American Silver Eagle Coins

As well as being available in bullion, proof and burnished versions, American Silver Eagle Coins can be found either certified or in uncirculated condition.

A certified coin will have been graded and certified by a professional grading service, such as the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). With a Certified American Silver Eagle Coin, you can have peace of mind that the grade and authenticity of your coin are backed by an industry-leading guarantee. A certified coin that is in excellent condition will also retain its value better and be worth more than a loose bullion coin.

Uncirculated American Silver Eagle Coins from the United States Mint will always be in outstanding condition because they have never been touch by anyone other than their creators, nor have they been used as currency. Put simply, uncirculated coins that are purchased from us will come directly from the U.S. Mint and be in brand new (uncirculated) condition.

Purchase One of The World’s Most Popular Coins Today

Crafted of .999 pure silver, the American Silver Eagle Coin is a wise investment that will retain its purchasing power and help to hedge against inflation. As demand for silver is rising at a rapid rate and the global supply is a finite resource, now is a great time to invest in these fine silver coins. Plus, American Silver Eagle Coins are among the easiest coins to buy and sell because they are so desired in just about every country in the world.

Whether you’re already a serious investor or just getting started with investing in the silver market, the American Silver Eagle Coin is a fantastic choice. Proof American Silver Eagle Coins are rarer and carry higher premiums than the bullion versions because they’re more collectible and have finer details. That said, any of the American Silver Eagle Coin types will be perfect for diversifying your portfolio due to their popularity and globally recognized status.
