Boasting over 1,000 years of experience, the Royal Mint is not only responsible for making all the United Kingdom coinage but also a huge range of medals and stunning collectible coins. The British Royal Mint is known worldwide for its proud heritage, artistry and craftsmanship, as well as being capable of producing silver coins to the highest quality standards.
Whether it is the iconic Silver Britannia Coin or pieces from the popular Lunar or Queen’s Beast Collection, there are plenty of stunning British Silver Coins to discover. The Royal Mint’s collections also include British Silver Coins in a variety of weights and quantities that are either struck in .999 fine silver or .9999 pure silver.
Many of the British Silver Coins to come from the Royal Mint are sought-after by investors and collectors from every corner of the globe. As it’s impossible to list them all, we’ve highlighted just some of the most wanted pieces ever created in England.
When the British Silver Britannia Coin was originally introduced in 1997, it was only available with .958 fine silver. This stayed the same until 2013 when all future versions of the famous coin were struck in .999 pure silver. All British Silver Britannia Coins have a face value of £2 (GBP).
The British Silver Britannia has featured various designs on the reverse side of the coin over the years but always an image of Britannia including seated poses, different standing images and Britannia in a chariot. Regardless of her pose, Britannia is always encircled by the coin’s weight, metal content and year of minting, along with the engraving BRITANNIA.
On the obverse is always a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II but the specific image varies depending on what year the coin was minted. This is because the Royal Mint has changed the portrait over time to ensure it’s in keeping with Her Majesty’s age. The portrait was last updated in 2015 by Jody Clark.
The Silver Britannia was first minted in 1997 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Gold Britannia Coin, otherwise known as the flagship coin of the Royal Mint.
Released in 2016, the British Silver Queen’s Beast Collection is a series of 2 oz. bullion coins that contain .9999 pure silver. Each coin has a face value of £5 (GBP) and features a unique design on its reverse. There are 10 coins to collect in total, all of which are inspired by the ancestral beasts of myth, legend and heraldry that stood guard over Queen Elizabeth II during her crowning ceremony in 1953.
The ten creatures include:
The Silver Queen’s Beast Collection began in 2016 because it was the year when Her Majesty became the world’s longest reigning living monarch. On the obverse side of each 1/4 oz., 1 oz., and 2 oz. coin is the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The collection is also special because it features the Royal Mint’s only 2 oz. silver bullion coin to date.
In 2014, the Royal Mint struck its first Lunar Coin from the British Silver Shengxiao Collection, a series named in honor of the Chinese zodiac. Every coin from the program consists of .999 fine silver and combines both British and Chinese heritage.
On the reverse side of each coin is an attractive design of one of the zodiac animals that represents a year of the calendar. All reverse images have been created by Wuon-Geon Ho, a talented British-Chinese artist with a real eye for detail. So far, the Royal Mint has released:
The obverse depicts the new Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, except for The Year of the Horse and The Year of the Goat, both of which feature Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 portrait of Her Majesty the Queen.
