The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is a staple for many silver hobbyists and bullion investors for its striking design and high silver content. Boasting .9999 pure silver and a face value of $5 (CAD), the coin is available only in 1 oz. weights and can be found in both bullion and proof versions.
On the obverse of every Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of mintage, along with the engravings ELIZABETH II and 5 DOLLARS. The image of Queen Elizabeth II has changed over the years and will either feature a young, middle-aged or mature looking face. The reverse of the coin depicts the well-known sugar maple leaf design with exceptional detail. This side has been stamped with the coins .9999 purity, which is joined by the text CANADA and FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR.
Making its debut in 1988, the Canadian Maple Leaf Coin is issued by the Canadian Government and has been hailed as the official silver bullion coin of Canada.
The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf came after the Gold Maple Leaf Coin, which was introduced for the first time in 1979. When released, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin was the only investment-grade coin to rival the popular South African Krugerrand. After the Gold Maple Leaf received such an amazing response from investors around the globe, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to release a silver version of the coin in 1988.
In its first year, around 1,000,000 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins were produced to keep up with demand. Throughout the years, mintage figures fluctuated and many different versions of the coin were created including commemorative pieces and 20th anniversary coins. Both bullion and proof versions of the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins are issued annually, an activity that has remained the same since the coin made its debut in the 80’s.
Demand for the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin peaked in 2010 when 17.7 million were minted. The mintage numbers have continually grown year after year, as has the coin’s popularity in the secondary marketplace.
In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint gave the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin a new look as a result of adding some unique security features. The traditional bullion finish on previous versions of the coin was replaced with radical lines that emerge from the coin’s center to create a light diffracting pattern that is specific to the coin. These radical lines have been precisely machined to within microns on the master tooling to ensure consistent die and coin production.
In addition to the radical lines, a micro-engraved security mark has been added to the coin’s reverse. This special security mark is a textured maple leaf that is micro-engraved with laser technology and incorporates the coin’s year of issue. Please be aware that these two security features will only be included on all Canadian Maple Leaf Coins produced from the year 2014.
As the flagship silver bullion coin of the Royal Canadian Mint and one of the world’s finest pure silver coins, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin offers you enormous value and is ideal for diversifying an investment portfolio. Featuring the same sharp and intricate designs as its gold sibling, it’s also considered a collector’s item and is recognized for its high level of purity.
