Commemorative Silver Dollars
As silver was commonly used to create U.S. coins before 1965, the U.S. Mint produced many Silver Dollars over the years. While the U.S. Mint also struck various Silver Dollar designs, some have become more valuable and collectible than others, such as the Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar. Some of the Commemorative Silver Dollars are also in demand including past and modern issues.
Silver Dollars are arguably some of the most popular coins to come from the U.S. Mint and offer collectors historic and aesthetic value. Investors around the globe can benefit from rare Silver Dollars as well, provided they invest in coins with a purity of at least 90%.
There are plenty of attractive Silver Dollar offerings to hunt down, and we’re going to focus on some the most established pieces to add to your portfolio or collection.
Morgan Silver Dollar
Minted by the U.S. Mint from 1878 to 1904, as well as in 1921, the Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most sought-after coins in existence today. The coin is quite large and features the head of Lady Liberty on its obverse, with an eagle in flight on its reverse side. It’s also worth considerably more than its face value and has become one of the most collected coins in America and beyond.
The Morgan Silver Dollar is particularly attractive to collectors and investors because it is composed of 90% silver. However, many people are also fascinated by the coin’s design, quality and historic value. The Morgan Silver Dollar’s beauty is thanks to George T. Morgan, the man responsible for designing the obverse and reverse images featured on the coin.
Peace Silver Dollar
The Peace Silver Dollar was produced by the U.S. Mint from 1921 to 1928, then in 1934 and 1935. Its design came from an artist called Anthony de Francisci who won a contest sponsored by the U.S. Mint. In 1921, the mint ran a competition where participants were given the chance to design the artwork for the Peace Dollar Coin.
On the obverse of the Peace Silver Dollar is the profile of Lady Liberty with windswept hair, while the reverse features the image of a resting eagle. The Peace Silver Dollar was actually the last true Silver Dollar ever minted and is one of the many reasons why the coin is so celebrated.
Commemorative Silver Dollars
The first United States Commemorative Coin was the Columbian Half Dollar, which was issued in 1892 and 1893. More coins were released right up until 1954 when Congress declared they would no longer pass laws to issue commemorative pieces. Then, in 1982, they passed a law that enabled the mint to produce a Commemorative Half Dollar in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of President George Washington.
Since then, the U.S. Mint has produced a large variety of Commemorative Silver Dollars on a regular basis. From the White House 1992 Silver Dollar and Marine Corps 2005 Silver Dollar to various Olympics Silver Dollars, coin enthusiasts can choose from a wide range of uncirculated or proof examples for their collections.
